Abstract

This project tracks PhD careers in Operations Research, Operations Management and Industrial Engineering. The first edition brings together 2,149 faculty profiles from OM List, across 202 institutions, with source-reported doctoral education and affiliations, plus 1,008 operations faculty found on the faculty pages linked from the Operations Academia directory and confirmed one by one on their own university pages. First placements are researched from university reports and CVs, with direct evidence links and an explicit record of outstanding research.

Keywords: doctoral education; academic careers; operations; industrial engineering.

* Initial prototype. Faculty data are sourced from OM List and, for the second group of people, from the universities' own faculty pages (faculty-roster-people.json). The directory and first-placement records are maintained separately.

01

Data coverage

The institutions represented in the data, and what we know about their graduates. The map shows where the doctorates were earned.

Institution coverage will appear here as records are added.
02

Explore the records

Search faculty careers and verified first placements. Every record links back to its source.

Faculty appointments describe the source directory; they do not establish a first job after a PhD.

Institution and employer profiles

Where each PhD program's people went first, how far their review has got, and who each employer hired straight after the doctorate. Compare up to four programs side by side.

Profiles will be available when the directory is populated.

Faculty directory

OM List — all faculty: names, source-listed affiliation, role, status and research areas. Snapshot: 16 October 2026.

First placements

University placement reports and dated CVs establish initial employers. Direct evidence links, review dates and short explanations accompany each published placement. Postdoctoral appointments count as first jobs when they precede faculty roles.

First-placement research progress

Research in progress. Unverified affiliations are never counted as first placements.

Verified outcomes will appear as source reviews are completed.

Universities with operations departments

The first of the project's two databases: universities, schools and departments that do Operations, imported from the Operations Academia directory. The second database is the people in the directory above and their verified first jobs. Where a university's name or Wikidata item matches a PhD institution in the people database, the two are linked; the match type is shown so it can be checked. Both databases are merged into one record per organisation (entities.json), keyed by Wikidata item where known, and each PhD institution and first-employer profile shows what the other database and the program register hold for the same organisation. The faculty pages the directory links are also read: the people listed there are matched to OM List, and the rest were reviewed one by one (each person's own page opened; title, area and any stated doctorate recorded).

Historical doctoral program register

Doctoral provision is recorded here, separately from the universities database above: a listing with an operations department does not establish a PhD program. The graduate census starts with programs, including predecessors and programs that stopped admitting students. Each entry links to official sources; unknown opening, admission-ending and final-award dates remain unknown. Graduate rosters and career histories will be added program by program.

Graduate lists by program and year

The names that the programs' own placement, alumni and graduate pages list, year by year, read both as they stand today and from archived copies in the Internet Archive, so that graduates who left academia or dropped off the current page are listed too. A listing shows only that the page named the person under that year on that date: it is not a verified degree or first job, years mean what each page says they mean (graduation, placement or job-market year), and no program-year is complete. Where a name and its PhD institution match someone in the people database, the row links there; nothing is inferred from a current job. The pages of schools that list every area are read whole, with the area the page states kept, so operations listings can be shown alone.

How the data is collected

The same six steps as a placement census, applied to a directory-based sample: collect public sources, structure them with stable identifiers, validate every change, publish versioned files, classify first jobs by explicit rules, and say plainly what is and is not available.

5.1

Collection

People come from the OM List faculty directory snapshot of 16 October 2026 (all 2,149 profiles, including retired, deceased and industry entries), with doctorate institution and year joined from the OM List PhD-by-year table by exact profile link. First jobs are then researched one person at a time from dated CVs, official placement reports, appointment announcements and employer biographies. Search results are only leads; a page has to be opened and read before anything is recorded. The directory focuses on business schools and excludes Industrial Engineering departments, so it is a sample of people who became faculty, not a census of graduates. A second source of people comes from the universities database: the faculty pages it links are read, the people listed there are matched to OM List, and the rest were reviewed one by one on 16 October 2026 (a reviewer opened each person's own page and recorded the outcome, the title and area shown and the doctorate only when a page states it; their first jobs are not researched yet). See the import provenance.

5.2

Structuring

Each person has a stable identifier that survives corrections. faculty.json preserves the import as received; placements.json holds verified first jobs with employer, role, start year, type, evidence link, paraphrased evidence and review date; research-status.json records one research disposition per person, including the sources consulted when a case stays unresolved. Derived databases are regenerated from these files, never edited: institutions.json (one row per PhD institution), employers.json (one row per first employer), universities.json (the Operations Academia directory of universities with operations departments), entities.json (the two databases and the program register merged into one record per organisation, keyed by Wikidata item where known, with every name from either source kept as an alias and nothing inferred across sources), the location files and a relational SQLite export built by scripts/build-research-database.py on the published schema. Every record in every file carries addedAt and updatedAt: the date and time (UTC) it was first published and last changed, kept in record-dates.json and included in the CSV download.

5.3

Validation

Research contributors write separate proposal files; one integrator reviews conflicts and merges by stable identifier, so a newer review can correct an older one but nothing is overwritten silently. The merge refuses records without a substantive reason, opened sources, an evidence link or a valid job type, and flags undocumented changes to a degree year or institution. Every deployment re-runs the checks: dataset identity, ledger coverage of every person exactly once, agreement between each published first job and its review record, and the relational schema tests. Corrections keep the original imported value next to the verified one, with the reason.

5.4

Publication

A push to the public repository validates and publishes this page and the data files; the Git history is the change log and the citation names the version date. Nothing is scheduled: updates happen when reviewed work is integrated. Download the current selection as CSV from the explorer, inspect any source directly, or report a correction or removal request (do not include private information in a public issue).

5.5

Classification

The first job is the first new appointment after the doctorate. A postdoc before a faculty job is the first job; a job that began well before the degree and simply continued is not, so the next new job counts; a post-doctoral appointment that starts in the final months before formal conferral counts, with the overlap noted; an announcement written before the degree establishes nothing. Types are tenure track, postdoc, other academic, industry, government, non-profit, or "type not reported" when a source names the employer but not the kind of appointment (a university name alone does not make a job tenure track). Start years are recorded only when documented, never copied from the cohort year. Full rules: RESEARCH-DESIGN.md.

5.6

Data availability

Counts load with the data.

Not yet collected: a graduate census by program and year, doctoral advisors, publications through the PhD year, and later career moves including academia-to-industry transitions. Their schema exists; populated datasets do not. Map locations and countries are name matches to Wikidata items, kept with their identifiers so a wrong match can be corrected.

Coverage limitations and interpretation

This is a directory-based view, not a complete census of PhD graduates or jobs. Faculty outside the source, industry careers, and unreported appointments may be absent. Cohort counts describe only directory members with a known PhD year. They should not be interpreted as graduating class sizes or employment rates. Every share shown on this site is a share of verified first jobs, and the unresolved and not-yet-reviewed people are reported beside it. Source classifications are not independently verified degree specializations.

Graduate census and industry careers

The graduate census will begin with a historical register of Operations Management, Operations Research and Industrial Engineering doctoral programs, including closed and renamed programs. We will enumerate graduates by program and year regardless of career destination, then add employment histories, doctoral advisors and publications through the PhD year. Each fact will carry its own sources and last-checked date. Industry entry and later moves out of academia will be recorded as separate career events. Publications through the PhD calendar year will be distinguished from publications known to precede the actual degree date. See the research design and dataset structure. Current coverage remains the imported faculty directory and its reviewed first placements.
